Research on effective degradation of medicine and hormone residues in surface water streams

Within the national but also international water chain, more and more medicine and hormone residues are found in surface water streams, in addition, more and more new industrial pollutants are also found.

In recent years, the project partners have studied and developed in several research projects the application of an efficient oxidation technique; Advanox, Advanced Oxidation (AOP) with hydrogen peroxide and UVC light. With this technique, the already existing purification effect of UV-C light is further enhanced by forming very powerful hydroxyl radicals from the hydrogen peroxide, which oxidise waste substances in the water.

Advanox Project

This project focuses specifically on the removal of these ‘new pollutants’ from relatively pure WWTP effluent. Because WWTP effluent is already extensively pre-treated, a single treatment step will be sufficient, whereas many different wastewater streams (domestic, industrial and agricultural/horticultural) converge here.

This project will demonstrate and test an optimal treatment that will significantly improve the chemical and ecological water quality of the various wastewater streams that converge at a WWTP.
