Validation of UV-systems: why it is so important for your water quality

Many UV suppliers design their systems primarily based on calculations. But calculating is not the same as proving. At Van Remmen UV Technology, we therefore consciously choose validation: demonstrating that our UV-system does exactly what it is supposed to do, under all conditions.

That may sound technical, and it is, but above all, validation delivers something very important to you: certainty.

What exactly is validation?

Validation means demonstrating in black and white that a UV system effectively disinfects the water. Not only under ideal circumstances in a calculation model, but also in realistic, less favourable situations such as turbid water, variations in flow or a lamp approaching the end of its lifetime.

We prove performance through:

  • Mathematical simulations
We model the water flow and the UV dose down to a detailed level, so we know exactly what is happening within the system.
  • Biological practical tests
Our systems are tested with Bacillus subtilis in accordance with the European drinking water standards, the same standards used by water authorities and drinking water companies. We test under all conceivable conditions, including the end-of-life situation of the UV lamp. This is the point at which the lamp is least powerful, yet the system must still fully comply with the standard.

Only when all those tests are successfully completed is a system officially validated.

Why is this important for your process?

Water disinfection is a crucial link in your operations. You don’t want to run risks of product contamination, process disruptions or microbiological issues. With a validated system, you can be certain that:

  • The system performs as promised
The effectiveness is not based on assumptions. You can rely on a guaranteed UV dose, under all circumstances.
  • You comply with standards and audits
Our validations align with international drinking water standards. That makes inspections, audits and certifications demonstrably easier.
  • Your process is demonstrably safe
You gain insight and certainty that are simply lacking with non-validated systems.

How validation led to our unique flow plate technology

Through years of testing, measuring and optimisation, we have developed a technology that makes a real difference in practice: our flow plate.

This flow plate, with precisely designed perforations, directs the water through the UV system and provides three major advantages:

  • Uniform UV treatment
Every water drop receives the correct UV dose. No hotspots, no shadow zones.
  • Intelligent flow for maximum efficiency
The water flows faster in areas with higher UV intensity, and slower where the intensity is lower.
  • Lower energy consumption
Because the UV dose is perfectly distributed, the system requires less power to achieve the same level of disinfection.

What does this deliver for you as customer?

  • Guaranteed disinfection
You can be certain that your water is microbiologically reliable, not theoretically, but demonstrably
  • 20-30% energy savings – In comparison to other UV systems
Thanks to the flow plate and the high optical efficiency of our systems. This results in significant operational cost savings on an annual basis.
  • Sustainable and future-proof
By dosing UV more efficiently, you reduce both your energy consumption and your CO₂ footprint.
  • High operational reliability
Validated systems perform predictably and are less prone to failure. Ideal for critical processes in industry, drinking water and food production.
